I mentioned a while ago that I was in the market for a new hat. Apparently, the day I mentioned it, I was having problems with my internet connection. I'm afraid that I'm having them today as well, and by the time I was able to bring up this page (where I can type out this post) I was seething with frustration. But I'm in the process of overcoming that, because I wanted to mention that last Saturday, I made up my mind and I finally bought a hat, pictured above. It met my main criteria: it has a brim, it goes with a variety of clothes (not just shorts and summer dresses), and it is not a fedora, because very rebelliously I can't bring myself to jump onto the fedora bandwagon, especially two years into it. I'm not sure what the sort of hat above, with a flat crown, is called. I found it at a little store called Arth on Houston Street near West Broadway, where I've had success in the past at end-of-season sales.
So, am I happy with the hat? Mixed. My husband does not love it, but I don't care about that. I'm pleased that I can wear it with jeans or my denim mini skirt, and it's light so it doesn't make my head too hot (nor does it leave a too-obnoxious line across the top of my head after a few hours' wearing). The main problem with it is - and this therefore also must be so of fedoras - is that in high mid-day sun it only shades the top half of my face.
Why don't I just find a big sun bonnet, a la Little House on the Prairie? It could be the start of a trend... and here's a how-to guide to making one from Mother Earth News, circa 1978... I'll let you know if I try it.
If you want a hat that will truly shield your entire face, I'm sure my mom could point you in the right direction. ;)

Um, thanks, but based on what you've told me I don't know if your Mom shares my concern for aesthetics?
