Just a quick post on a hot Sunday evening - I hope all of you enjoyed your weekends! I did.
I suddenly ran out of bread last week, a big emergency for me, and was going to run to the fancy grocery store near me to buy a fresh loaf from their bakery. My husband reminded me that I could go to Orwasher's instead, which is also in the neighborhood but sort of tucked away on a side street, out of sight, out of mind. In the spirit of patronizing local businesses, as I was discussing the other day, I decided I'd buy a loaf there instead.
Orwasher's has been at this location on East 78th street, just East of 2nd Avenue, since 1916, and was owned by the Orwasher family until 2007 when it was sold to another individual. I'd stopped by Orwasher's from time to time from before 2007, and I had noticed that there were some changes there - for example they sell cheese, now - but the breads and cookies are as good as ever and I can't believe I haven't been a more regular customer. So much of my neighborhood has been taken over by big glass condominiums and ATM outlets that it's always exciting to see some remnants of its Yorkville past. And so this is another local business I must remember - I've bought a second loaf there since. Swiss Health Bread - very good indeed!
